Q4 ~ Week of June 20-24

This is our last week! For our final week together we are making lemon scones. After the scones demo on Monday, students will complete a course reflection. Duotangs of our class work and recipes will go home with students on our last day.

Chicken Stir Fry Week:
This week's focus is on chicken lab safety and how to safely prepare raw chicken. Each kitchen will make chicken stir fry with a choice of teriyaki or sweet and sour sauce prepared from scratch.

This week we are learning about food safety, particularly when working with raw ground beef. Our lab this week is taco salad, with a focus on knife skills and sanitation. On Friday we have a new mystery lab, Be an Herb or Spice Detective! Students will learn a bit about the history of spices and how spices are used to enhance the flavour of dishes. Working in groups students will try to identify 24 different herbs and spices based on appearance and smell.

We have a 2-day las this week: soft pizza pretzels. Our lesson is on Food Waste and students will be introduced to this challenging topic and will come up with solutions to this worldwide issue.

No School Monday (Victoria Day)
This week we are making stovetop mac & cheese and students will personalize the recipe with their cooking partner.

This week it's all about APPLES!
We have two lessons planned, knife skills and an apple lesson/tasting. On Friday we are making apple crisp using Granny Smith apples.

Q4 ~ Week of May 9-13

We have our first lab this week is Italian soda. During this lab we will be focused on learning lab routines and kitchen safety, particularly with using the stove. This week students will design their own cookie recipe after learning about the science behind cookie making. The second lab this week is on Friday and students will be making their personalized cookies.

Q4 ~ Week of May 2-6

SAFETY, SANITATION and START-UP
This week we are continuing with a review of safety, sanitation and start-up. We will watch Kitchen Safety Showdown and work on a Food Studies Olympics review package. Our first cooking lab will be next week and we will go over the recipe and cooking techniques on Friday.

Q4 ~ Week of April 25-29

Welcome to a new quarter of exploratory classes at RMS!

This week students will spend time getting to know their classmates and the daily routines in the Food Studies class. We will also begin navigating the enhanced safety and sanitation procedures that are an important part of our classroom learning this year. We will also go through the course outline and students will be given a welcome letter to share with their parent/guardian. This letter must be signed and returned in order for students to participate in upcoming cooking labs.

Q3 ~ Week of April 18-22

No School Monday (Easter Monday)
For our final week together we are making lemon scones! There is no time for a teacher demo, so you will be tested on recipe reading and measuring accuracy.
